He administered three different types of MRIs and they all came up clean. Not knowing what could be wrong, he referred her to an orthopedic doctor in Redding. Again, she went through three more MRIs as well as an EMG and blood work -- all were good, she said. Her next step was to see a NOTICES neurologist in Chico. He did an EMG again, which she said was very painful. The neurologist suspected ALS but sent her to the UC San Francisco Medical Center for further evaluation. Again, the doctors put her through extensive blood testing and another EMG. "It was left to a process of elimination," she said. She said because there was nothing else it could be, they gave her an official diagnosis of ALS. "You know what the weird thing is, though? In most cases, the disease is inherited and there is nobody in my family who has had it," said Emis. For this reason, it was suggested she join the ALS Association to help in its research and find a link between her life history and the disease. Several research studies have been and continue to be conducted to determine what genetics and/or environmental factors contribute to the disease. Now that she has been diagnosed, Emis goes to the UC Davis Multidisciplinary ALS Clinic every three months for follow-up care. When she was first diagnosed she was still walking. Less than two months ago she was only able to get around with a walker. Now, she is wheelchair bound and unable to walk on her own. "As soon as I started having symptoms in January the disease came on real fast. By the end of March, everything was going downhill. "I had to give up ev(. rything. We used to take walks and play outside with our kids and ride bikes as a family. I did all the yard work and cleaned the house. I had planned on painting the outside of my house this year and then this happened. I used to read my Bible every morning but now I can't even lift it. I can't even do my little girl's hair," p3mis said emotionally. Because her husband works a normal five-day workweek, she has to wait until he gets home to cook meals or help her use the bathroom. She has no caregiver and for the most part sits alone by herself while her kids are at school and her husband is at work. Being a stay-at-home morn Before being diagnosed, Emis was "a go-getter." Up until three years ago, the Emises were foster parents. They spent nearly nine years of their lives caring for 28 different children, two of whom they adopted. Emis said she quit her job in order to give 100 percent to the" kids under their care. Before that, she spent 17 years in the workforce. "I decided to stay home to give (the foster children) the quality care they needed and deserved. We loved them as our own," she said. Now that Emis needs help, the government is refusing to give it to her, she said. Because she technically has not had a job in over 10 years Emis does not qualify for federal programs that could have helped lift her burden. She doesn't qualify for early retirement, Social Security, In-Home Support Services -- nothing, she says. Emis admitted being deeply bothered by this fact, not just on her own behalf but on the behalf of women all over the United States who choose to stay home and raise their children rather than send them to day care while working. "I hear about these mothers and think it's awesome that they can stay home with their kids but what happens when they end up like me? They won't be able to get the help they need. "I think ifI had known this would happen years ago I would've at least worked part time. But I think it's important that a mother stays home -- that's why I didn't work when I fostered: ........ "Because I stayed home I was able to give those kids quality time. Most were neglected and abused and I thought it was important to give them ]ove of family. If I worked they would have been in day care all day and what is thaff" Sense of community The couple has lived in Chester for 21 years. Daryl Emis is the produce manager at Holiday Market. The Emises are members of LACC. In addition to the fundraising its members are doing, the church has set up a signup sheet through which women have volunteered to sit with Emis Tuesday through Friday and either read the Bible to her or just provide company. They also provide the family with two meals per week, which Emis said has helped reduce her husband's stress, "It's overwhelming the support and financial help and prayers we've received from the community and church," said Daryl Emis. "I was always a strong believer (in God) but to see the love and support of so many people, it has helped me get through this and lifts a lot of the burden. Just having a listening ear or someone to pray for me has been an amazing experience," said Irmgard Emis.
