I had the pleasure of volunteering at the race, and was very impressed by the , #cent iind by SBTS " and volunteers. I have participated in century rides before, as a rider, a volunteer and as an organizer. This was by far the most professional event of this nature I have ever participated in. Every precaution was taken to ensure the safety of all participants. The feedback I heard from riders was that they loved the course, felt fully supported by the aid stations and staff and thought the event was great fun and planned on returning next year. I met cyclists from all over the state, and even one couple from Utah. Most of the participants I spoke to had never been to Plumas County before, and said they would be bringing their families here for future vacations. Some were even brainstorming how they could move here. All were amazed by the beauty of Plumas County as well as by the event, which they felt was a huge success. while in Portola during the hours before and after the race, I saw many cars with bikes on them parked at our local restaurants, stores and hotels. I can only assume that most (if not all) were here for the race. The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship should be supported in its efforts by our community and by our county and federal agencies. They do great work that brings people to Plumas County, and strengthens our community and economy as well. I was happy to become a member after the race and look forward to supporting SBTS in the future at any of their world-class events. Gene Nielsen Crescent Mills From left field Richard Allen Smith, a disabled veteran of the Afghanistan war, sentthis message to Mitch McConnell, Senate minority leader: "Denying health ca e and education funding to veterans is unconsciotmble. Stop blocking those who bravely served our country from receiving the care they deserve." Smith goes on to explain that in February, "Senator McConnell blocked the Omnibus Veterans' Spend'i g bill from receiving an up or down vote in the U.S. Senate, preventing veterans from receiving expanded health care, benefits, educational opportunities and access to jobtraining programs." Given McConnelrs recent tactics and his reason for blocking the bill was that it did not have sanctions against Iran, one could use the old expression that he was coming from "left field," which, I am sure, would not set well with him. Salvatore Catalano Taylorsville Confusing concepts Life gets very confusing, especially when a person gets older. For example, what does "same sex marriage" really mean? I guess it could mean the same sex as before. The question arises what 'before' really means. Then there is the problem: who is the man of the house? The practical solution seems to be to use a number system. But who is number 1 or 2? what happens when one gets pregnant? Better yet, how did that happen? The other issue I don't understand is federal government bonus system. According to the news media, the employees working for, rather employed by, the VA are doing a great job falsifying appointment records which has resulted in the death of some veterans. I guess the bonus awarded is sort of a commission for eliminating the cost of treating some sick veterans. The IRS has the same system. Some of the recipients of the bonus owe money for back taxes. They have no problem with threatening or jailing ,.. citizens for:non-comP "lian,, Ce with the tax laws, which obviously do not apply to IRS workers. I mean employees. It reminds me of President Reagan's statement that there are a lot of people out of work but they have jobs. Nobody ever gets fired so the problems remain and become systemic. Why do government workers have to have medical insurance, sick leave, vacation time and retirement benefits, in addition to a bonus? Why does our Congressman not submit a House Bill which makes it illegal for the federal government to pay a bonus to anybody, especially for not doing the job. All it does is create corruption, but that's not a new concept in government. Jan Klernent Quincy Contact your elected officials...
