Our president, Adrienne Fagalde, has returned from her winter home in Arizona, and she conducted our May 12 meeting. Other snowbirds in our guild are slowly arriving, and it is great to have everyone back with us. During the business portion of our meeting, committee reports were given and a new block of the month was displayed. Encouragement was given to members to complete their challenge quilts. This year's theme is "Tradition with a Modern Twist." The specifications are to design either a 34-inch-square table topper quilt or a 17-by-34-inch wall hanging. The challenge quilts will be displayed at our July meeting. Our show-and-tell was wonderful with all the winter projects that came back with the snowbirds as well as the quilts and other projects displayed by those living here full time. Several "Heartwarmers" were displayed. These quilts are those we work on all year long and donate to local organizations. At Christmas we give quilts and toys to the Chester State Preschool and Mountain Methodist Children's Center, and also to the Plumas County Sheriffs Department. We also make them for Hospice and if we hear of anyone in need of the comfort of a quilt, we give one to them, too. Our regular workshop, where PATCHWORK POST JEAN 'MARTIN we get together to work on these quilts, is the third Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the community room behind the ABC Center, 372 Main St. Our May guest, Rami Kim, presented the program part of the meeting and it was spectacular! We were all amazed at the creativity, workmanship and beauty of her clothing, bags, quilts and dolls. She came from Korea when she was 23 years old and she now lives in Rocklin. Her sense of humor was wonderful as she laughed about the 11 sewing machines she keeps all lined up and ready to sew with different colored thread. Her workshop the day following was very educational and several of her techniques were shared. Coming up next month at our June 9 meeting will be Judy Johnson from Chico. She and her husband have summer home here and she is a member of our guild. They have lived in Chico for 44 years, and Judy has been a member of the Annie's Star Quilt Guild for 23 years. Over the years she has made many different styles of quilts, from pieced to appliqued and art designs. Several years ago she was responsible for obtaining wall quilts for the Enloe Cancer Center -- all of which are still hanging there today, including the one that she made. Judy has always participated in our quilt shows and the Plumas-Sierra County Fair. We all remember her very large chicken quilt with lots and lots of appliqu6. Here's another educational term. We all appreciate hand-quilted quilts, but in recent years it has become popular to fmish by machine quilting. After the quilt top has been pieced or appliqued, it is placed on top of a backing and batting. That in itself is an interesting • term: "a quilt sandwich." But today we are talking about a "walking foot." This is a specialized foot that is attached to the sewing machine that allows the "quilt sandwich" to feed all layers through the machine at exactly the same rate and pressure. There are some sewing machines that have these feet already built in, but other machines require a separate purchase of a"walking foot." The Chester Piecemakers Quilt Guild lets everyone know they are always welcome to join us at our meetings. They are held the second Monday of each month, at 6:30 p.m. in the Almanor Recreation Center, 450 Meadowbrook Loop in Chester. For more information about the Chester Piecemakers Quilt Guild you may call me at 259-5060 or Adrienne Fagalde at 259-4178.
