bA Wednesday, June 11, 2014 Lnes~er erogresswe, vves~woocl emeeress Samantha P. Hawthorne Staff Writer shawthorne@plumasnews.com A routine propane tank exchange went awry Monday, June 2, resultingin one Ferrellgas employee being airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center. The employee, who has not been identified, was replacing a propane tank within Lake Almanor Country Club when the replacement tank exploded in his face, said'homeowner and eyewitness Mike Moe. As the assigned incident commander, Peninsula Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Bob Phillips said the steel-reinforced hose used to transfer propane from one tank to the other appeared to have failed. Investigations are still underway, so Phillips was unable to pinpoint the exact cause. Because the explosion caused a workplace injury, representatives from Cal/OSHA were on scene to take a report. According to Phillips, the explosion subsequently resulted in venting of the original tank, which he said sounds like a freight train. "The noise is deafening," he said. Phillips said there were two explosions. He said that heat from the first blast caused a second, smaller, tank on the property to explode. He said that one or two of the service truck's tires also ruptured, which could have been why people reported hearing several explosions. Both Mike Moe and his wife Diane made it safely out of the house, and Phillips confirmed there were no fatalities. The Ferrellgas employee who was exchanging the tanks, however, sustained second- and third-degree burns and is likely to remain in the hospital for a while, said Phillips. "He was very fortunate to have survived." To reduce the possibility of further injuries, the area was closed off to the public, and residents who tried to enter through the Clifford Drive gates were redirected into the country club through the Peninsula Drive gates. By 10 p.m., however, limited traffic was allowed to enter. The Moes' house sustained extensive smoke, water and heat damage. Phillips said carbon monoxide levels were too high to let the family back in Monday night; however, the area has since been secured and they have been given permission to return. Phillips said the house to the left of the Moes also sustained damage. He said in addition to the slight damage See Propane, page 7A Multiple agencies respond to reports of a wildfire within the Lake Almanor Country Club on June 2, but propane tank explosion caused a severe residential fire at Mike and Diane Moes house.
