IJlll " " , " ; IIIIILIlIIIIIIIIi iilliiiiii 6C Wednesday, April 8, 2009 Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter TRACK, 00rom page lC "They're excited about the sport of running, and they jumped on the team." Hanna is no stranger to coaching. He has coached youth football in Quincy for 15 years, including four years as an assistant coach for Quincy's junior varsity football team. Hanna explained that many of the athletes on the track team are there to im- prove their speed for football and soccer. "We have a fifty-fifty mix of football and soccer play- ers," said Hanna. "Football and soccer families can come together and form one strong team." Hanna is proud of the fact that his track team warms up like a football team, and he compared other track teams' warm-ups to a yoga class. Hanna's experience in track comes from running in high school for three years. He said he joined the track team to improve his speed for football. "I graduated in 1982 from a small private school in San Diego called Christian High School," said Hanna. "I was taught from a young age that the purpose of sports is to glorify God through competi- tion." Hanna made reference to the movie "Chariots of Fire," in which Olympic gold medalist Eric Liddell said that when he runs, he feels God's pleasure. "I teach my own children that the reason we compete in sports is to bring glory to God and feel His plea- sure," said Hanna. "I want to have a strong Christian tes- timony." The revival of Quincy's track team has been support- ed by Jerry Thomas, the Quincy High School athletic director who used to coach track at QHS. The Quincy Booster Club paid for uni- forms and stop watches for the team. Feather River College is also a critical component to the sport, with its all-weath- er track and recently-refur- bished long jump pits. The college is generously allow- ing the use of its facilities, and a few college students are helping teach techniques in the various events. Chester teacher and coach Chad Hyink, the last one to coach Quincy's track team, explained that FRC's all-weather track is a huge benefit. "When Chester's track is still under snow and Porto- la's track is mud, Quincy has a huge advantage with an all-weather track," said Hyink. Another great thing going for Quincy's new team is as- sistant coach Harry Skemp, who is very knowledgeable about track and field and an expert in high jump. Since Quincy does not cur- rently have high jump equip- Quincy coach Dan Hanna, left, and Portola coach Rick Bass talk track. Photo by Shannon Morrow ment, Skemp trains kids on the event the day of the track meets. Remarkably, Quincy has done very well in the event, despite getting to practice just a few times before the competition. The Quincy track team hopes to raise between $4,000-$5,000 to purchase high jump equipment. Near- ly a dozen businesses and a group of local runners sup- ported the team's major fundraiser last weekend, a 5K run/walk from QHS to FRC. Results Quincy and Portola both performed well in the track meet at Durham High School April 1. Other teams compet- ing were Pierce, East Nico- las and Durham. In the varsity boys' compe- tition, Portola's Chase Shirley won fh:st place in the 300-meter hurdles, second place in the 110-meter hur- dles a.nd third place in high jump. Quincy's Jared Southwick won first place in the triple jump. Jimmy Compton placed third in the long jump, Evan Ashley took fourth in shot put, and Sam Williams finished fifth in discus. For Portola, David Fair took fourth in the 300-meter hurdles and fourth in the high jump. Reece Housel placed fifth in the 800-meter run and fifth in the mile. In the varsity girls' divi- sion, Quincy's Hannah Mor- row claimed second place in long jump, second in discus, third in the 100-meter dash and third in high jump. Mor- row totaled 22 points in the fQur events, earning third place overall for Quincy in the girls' varsity competi- tion. Quincy's junior varsity boys again dominated the field, earning 128 points overall. The other four boys' JV teams combined for 114 points. Josh Hanna won the 1-mile and 2-mile races; Devonte Smith won the ll0-meter hurdles; Jared Southwick won the 300-meter hurdles; Jarrett Gibson won the 800- meter run; Alex Easley won the 200-meter run; Ethan Skemp won the high jump and Justin Lusk, Brandon Davis,,,Easley and Skemp won the 4x400 relay. Portola's Mario Rodriguez won first place in discus and second in shot put.
