2C Wednesday, April 8, 2009 Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship working on several good projec DELAINE FRAGNOLI Managing Editor dffagnoli@plumasnews.com The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship has announced its line-up of trail workdays for the summer season. The first Trail Daze event is scheduled for Saturday, April 11. Meet at 9 a.m. at Yu- ba Expeditions in Down- neville for work on the North Yuba extension. The group has been working on this trail project for more than a decade. Expect to work until about 5 p.m. SBTS provides bagels for breakfast, makings for sack lunches and an after- work barbecue. The group al- so provides tools, but you can bring your own ff you have some. A second Trail Daze is set for Saturday, June 6, on the Plumas National Forest -- more details to come. The third event is slated for Sun- day, Sept. 13, in the Lakes Basin area. Here's some exciting news: The SBTS expects to break ground on the Mills Peak Trail next month. The seven- mile trail is the first segment of a larger planned Graeagle Trail System. The MPT is lo- cated just two miles south of Graeagle in Plumas National Forest. The route follows a prehis- toric Maidu path that rises from Mohawk Valley to the top of Mills Peak (complete with Forest Service lookout), offering incredible views of Mohawk Valley, Sierra Val- ley, the Sierra Buttes and Lassen Peak. It also connects the town of Graeagle to the Lakes Basin Recreation Area, making it a non-motor- ized alternative to using the Gold Lake Highway. The project has garnered substantial community sup- port. To date it has been funded through the Plumas County Board of Supervisors, Eastern Plumas Parks and Recreation District, and Plumas-Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative. The project has also required the expendi- ture of SBTS general funds and hundreds of volunteer hours to get it "shovel ready." SBTS has an organized ride, called the Spring Epic, set for May 16 along the North Yuba Trail-- the group expects the extension from Goodyears Bar to Downieville to be complete by then. The group doesn't expect to stop there, however. Ulti- mately, SBTS wants to see the trail run from Yuba Pass downstream all the way to BuUards Bar reservoir. Recently, the Highway 49 corridor, from the town of Camptonville to Yuba Pass, was nominated to receive Na- tional Scenic Byway status. If the highway does receive na- tional recognition, federal grant funds would be made available for recreation en- hancement projects that are located within the highway corridor. SBTS has been working on its own Highway 49 Scenic Byway Enhancement Plan-- aT0-mile, non-motorized, multiple-use trail connecting the river's headwaters at Yu- ba Pass (elevation 6,700 feet) to the nation's fourth highest dam at Bullards Bar reser- voir (elevation 2,000 feet). This uniquely beautiful route would follow pre-historic, historic and newly construct- ed pathways to link gold-rush era towns, Forest Service campgrounds and some of California's most stunning and rugged backcountry, says SBTS.
