EOUAI .OUSt.G OPPORTUNITY Published FRB, IVR, PR, CP March 17, 2010 Longboard racing culminates Sunday Shannon Morrow sports Editor sports@plumasnews.com The final longboard races of the season, deemed the world championships, will take place this Sunday, March 21, at the Plumas Eu- reka Ski Bowl above JohnsviUe. Registration and practice runs will begin around 9:30 a.m., and the races will start at high noon. There will also be historic presentations shortly after 11 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow the races, in which the top racers will be recog- nized and special prizes will be awarded. Among the awards will be prizes for spectators in the best period attire. For those who plan to race, you must be a member of the Plumas Ski Club, which costs $15 annually. The registration fee is $10 for racers who have their own longboard skis, and $20 for racers who need to use club skis. There is a limited number of club skis, which are avail- able on a first-come, first- served basis. All racers must make an attempt at historical attire, and leather boots are re- quired. Only authentic "dope" wax is allowed. Spec- tators are also encouraged to wear historic attire. The history of skiing in Plumas County dates back to the 1860s, when miners of the "Lost Sierra" used skis or "snowshoes" to travel and recreate. Apparently the world's first ski lift was at Eureka Peak, where miners rode ore buckets up the mountain with skis in hand, ready for the long descent back to Johnsville. This distinguishes Plumas County as having the oldest recorded sport skiing in the Western Hemisphere. For more information on the longboard races, contact the Plumas County Visitors Bureau at (800) 326-2247 or the 283-6345. You may also visit the Plumas Ski Club on- line at plumasskiclub.org. FISHING REPORT Frenchman Lake Weather has been fairly good this past week. Fisher- men report that the dam or nearby is best for fishing. Nightcrawlers, floating them off the bottom about 5 to 10 feet, are producing good re- sults. The road up to the dam is. clear, but you will need a four-wheel drive vehicle for around the lake.
