Chester Progressive, Westwood PinePress Wednesday, March 17, 2010 7A SMUCKERS, from page 6A said that the period clothing worn by the boys actually belonged to the Smucker brothers. This particular commer- • cial is due to come out next Christmas, and it only took a couple of wreaths to turn snowy Johnsville into Christmas. The rest of the scenery was already Christ- mas card pretty. In the commercial, the boys are delivering jams and jelly from the family business to people in the neighborhood so several Johnsville residences are featured, including Deanna Fregulia's home, the old ho- tel, the Daun residence and the Agnew house. The parking lots at Plumas-Eureka State Park and below were full of trucks and transport vehi- cles that brought about 60 crewmembers into the area, including food service and snowmaking experts. For many of these south- ern California residents, Plumas County and its rural atmosphere and scenic mountains was new terrain. One production assistant, Matthew, admitted that it was the first time he had ever experienced snow. Dri- ving during a snowstorm was mesmerizing, a bit of slipping and sliding added excitement, but this, he said, as he indicated the snow covered mountains and dusted pines completely surrounding him, was the prettiest thing he'd ever seen. Jof Hanwright, location manager for The Cartel, was directed to Johnsville while scouting Sierra and Plumas counties for two days. He was directed to find 1950s farmhouse architecture, but in a neighborhood. "That's a little like look- ing for a needle in a haystack," he said, so dis- covering Johnsville was a real find. Because the Johnsville lo- cation was meant to portray Ohio, filming de-emphasized the pine trees and concen- trated on apple trees and other deciduous trees in Johnsville. The crew also filmed at a Calpine ranch. In the two prior years, The Cartel, owned by direc- tor and cameraman Leslie Dektor, filmed Smucker's commercials in Sebastopol and Watsonville. The company has previous- ly made car commercials along the Feather River Canyon, so Hanwright was fa- miliar with Plumas County. Hanwright said that film- ing in the area has been a positive one. "Everyone has been so hospitable and friendly," he said. For Johnsville residents, the filming provided a brief bustle of activity and a bit of excitement for winter-weary folk. The camera is king. Photos by Diana Jorgenson Snowy Johnsville and its beautiful vintage houses became the locale for a Smucker's commercial last week. Johnsville's old hotel, plus the FreguHa, Daun and Agnew homes were decorated for Christmas to film a commercial expected to appear on television next Christmas.
