Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Wednesday, March 12, 2014 5C Plumas skiers compete at state finals James Wilson Sports Editor in the state championship. Twenty-four teams from all over California gathered at the ski resort for four days of racing. This season was Chester coach Kathleen Copeland's first year coaching the team. Members of Chester and Quincy's ski and snowboard teams traveled to Northstar Resort last week to compete According to her, the year was monumental a.s a learning experience. "One thing that stood out to me was that it wasn't about teaching these kids how to carve or get through the gates," reflected Copeland. "It was about teaching perseverance, self-confidence and believing in oneself." Copeland's teaching methods truly paid off. Chester snowboarder Wesaly Hedrick was the top scorer for Plumas County. Hedrick competed at the state level after placing first in giant slalom in the Central Division I snowboarding finals. At the state championship, Hedrick took ninth in state at giant slalom and eighth in giant slalom and slalom combined. Hedrick competed against all the other racers who were all hot on his trail. "I didfl't think I would do as well as I did," said Hedrick. "Going into it, I put it in my head what I needed to do and focused on going fast." Accompanying Hedrick on Chester's snowboarding team was Cody Najera, who took 28th place in slalom. Najera had a combined time of 57.72 seconds. Hedrick moved on to the state competition after placing first in his division. Photo by Cheryl Henry skiers, Quincy's Che Rubalcava-Cunan did the best. Rubalcava-Cunan placed 16th in giant slalom and llth in slalom. In slalom, Rubalcava-Cunan came just 0.03 seconds away from placing in the top 10 of the state. Chester skier Dakota Strand's giant slalom time was 2:04.21, just a hair longer than Rubalcava-Cunan's. Strand earned 17th place in both slalom and giant slalom. In the slalom race, Quincy's Cody Morrison placed 26th and Dayne Lewis took 43rd. In giant slalom, Daniel Haygood placed 35th and Morrison did not finish. In all, Quincy ranked ninth out of the 24 teams that competed. Chester's team was too small to tally team points. "I am very proud of the Quincy High School ski team," commented Quincy coach Katy Dyrr. "They trained very hard all season and placed well at the state championship. Conditions were wet and soggy on the mountain, but that did not dampen the racers' spirits." Dyrr went on to mention that the Northstar racing staff commended the Plumas County athletes on their outstanding behavior and welcomed them back anytime. i & Service PROPANE Call Us But Just Call Us!
